LONGVIEW FARMS – HOME RAISED BEEF

We raise cattle in the rolling hills of scenic south-central Iowa. The views are breath taking and the sunsets spectacular. We operate our cow/calf operation in what is termed an intensive rotational grazing operation so that we can maximize our grass/legume pastures.

The cattle that are part of our “home raised beef” program are supplemented with grain mix as we apply the finishing touches. The grain does not include any hormones or growth additives. Our objective is to raise our beef as natural as possible utilizing pastures or hay depending on the season.

As is true with other purchases, the cost of beef is more economically priced when purchased in larger quantities. Overall, the price is similar to the cost of good hamburger which ultimately means your roast, rib-eye and steaks are being purchased at hamburger prices.

Our beef is sold in quarters, halves or whole steers. We target the steers to be 1200lbs; a quarter cut results in about 120lbs of freezer meat. In terms of freezer space about 3-4 cubic feet is needed for a quarter cut or 120lbs of freezer meat. If the steer is over 1200lbs or slightly less than 1200lbs, prices are adjusted accordingly.

  • Hamburger can be packaged in 1, 2 and 5lbs
  • Roasts are typically sized 2 to 4lbs
  • Steaks can be cut to your preference from 1/2 inch on up
  • Steaks, Roasts and Round cuts approximate 40-45% with hamburger making up the rest

Beef cuts

We are confident based on current customer feedback, if you are a meat lover, the best beef you can buy is directly from the farmer. From a health perspective it pays to know what goes into our food. We use the Wagner Locker (515-462-2124) located at 908 N 10 th Street, Winterset, Iowa 50273 and they will assist you with determining your cut and packaging preferences. The beef hangs (cures) for two weeks to help with the tenderizing; the following week the beef is cut and packaged and ready for pickup.

If you refer new customers, we will provide you a $50 discount on your next order.
